Project Description
What is oral medicine and pathology?
Oral medicine, also known as dental medicine, is a clinical specialty which straddles dentistry and medicine. Specialists in oral medicine are concerned with the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of conditions that affect the mouth, jaws, and face.
Oral pathology is another field that is closely related to oral medicine. It is a laboratory-based discipline that involves microscopic examination of oral tissue samples, obtained with a biopsy, to determine the presence of disease. Oral pathologists use oral signs and symptoms to detect oral cancer and premalignant lesions.
Another allied dental speciality is oral and maxillofacial radiology, which is concerned with the interpretation of dental X-rays and 3D digital imagery using state-of-the-art imaging and scanning equipment.
