We are a team of clinicians bringing together under the same roof the specialities of periodontics, implant dentistry, prosthodontics, and oral medicine and pathology. Our patients benefit from the combined expertise and experience of professionals who have trained at the most prestigious dental institutions in Europe.

Edward Sammut

BChD, MSc, MClinDent (Perio), MFDS, MRD RCSEd, FICD

Specialist in Periodontics

Edward qualified in 2001 and after a two-year residency in Oral Surgery and Restorative Dentistry, he worked for one year at the Edinburgh Postgraduate Dental Institute. In 2005, he commenced the four-year specialist training programme in Periodontology at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Dental Institute and obtained his MSc and MClinDent in Periodontology. Before returning to Malta, he spent five years in London practicing as a visiting specialist in prestigious private practices.

Edward’s main project now is leading his father’s dental practice forward as Sammut Specialists. He has also maintained his interest in teaching and holds the post of Visiting Lecturer at the University of Malta, is the Director of the ITI Study Club Malta and mentors young dentists in implant treatment.

In 2019, Edward was awarded the title of Fellow in the International College of Dentists in a ceremony in Thessaloniki in Greece.

Elizabeth Martinelli

BDS, MSc, MClinDent (Perio), MFDS RCSEng, MRD RCSEd, FICD

Specialist in Periodontics

Elizabeth qualified from Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2001. Following completion of her vocational training, Elizabeth undertook an eighteen-month rotation as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In June 2009 she completed the four-year specialist training programme in Periodontology at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Dental Institute, London. Her research into the health beliefs and attitudes to quitting smoking in periodontal patients has been published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology.

In 2019, Elizabeth was awarded the title of Fellow in the International College of Dentists in a ceremony in Thessaloniki in Greece.

Currently, Elizabeth works both in private practice at Sammut Specialists and at the University of Malta as a Visiting Lecturer.

David Mifsud

BChD, Dr Med Dent, PhD

Prosthodontist

After receiving the BChD degree from the University of Malta in 2006, Dr. David Mifsud worked as an associate dental surgeon in local private practice. Thereafter he joined an established private and NHS practice in the UK, where he spent 2 years practicing general dentistry. Between 2009 and 2012, he joined a three-year postgraduate advanced training programme in prosthodontics and material sciences.

Back in Malta, he became engaged within the Faculty of Dental Surgery as a demonstrator, lecturer and researcher and also began working in private practice. In January 2013, David joined Sammut Specialists, where he is responsible for the treatment planning and prosthetic needs of the patients.

In April 2021, David defended his PhD Thesis on the subject of immediately loaded implant supported overdentures in the mandible.

Maria Luisa Gainza Cirauqui

DDS (Costa Rica), PhD (Spain)

Specialist in Oral Medicine and Pathology

Maria Luisa received her Bachelor Degree in Dental Surgery at the University of Costa Rica in 2005. In 2009, she specialized in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology at the University of the Basque Country, Spain, and continued her research doctoral training with the same university until 2012.

In 2013 she moved to Malta, where she currently works both in private practice at Sammut Specialists and at the University of Malta, where she is Head of Department of Dental Surgery and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery. Maria Luisa is author of several publications and has presented her research at various international conferences.

Gareth Farrugia

BChD (Melit).

General Dentist

Gareth graduated from the University of Malta Dental School with distinction in 2013. Since then he has worked exclusively in private practice performing the full range of general dental treatments, however his favourite fields are endodontics (root canal treatment and re-treatment) and minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry using bonded aesthetic materials.

Maria Magri

Dentist with a special interest in Endodontics

Maria Magri graduated from the University of Malta in 2015 and is currently reading for a Master of Science in Endodontics at King’s College London.

Christine Micallef

BChD, MFDS RCSEd

General Dentist

Christine graduated from the University of Malta with a first class honours in 2017. She worked as a house officer at Mater Dei Hospital for a year before moving into private practice. She strives to maintain her knowledge of cutting-edge techniques, research and dental practice by participating in local and international dental conferences.

Dr. Rebecca Gabriele

B. Ch. D (Melit)

Dentist with a special interest in Periodontics

Rebecca graduated from the University of Malta in 2017 and is currently reading for a Master in Clinical Periodontics at the College of Medicine & Dentistry, Birmingham. She is an active member of the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry UK and an affiliate member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. She currently works both in private practice and at the University of Malta as a Clinical Tutor in Periodontology.

Mary Jane Galea

BSc (Hons.) in Dental Hygiene

Dental Hygienist

Mary Jane has been a member of Sammut Specialists since March 2019. She worked as a dental assistant for eight years; during this period of time, she qualified with great results as a Dental Assistant. Qualified in 2015 as a Dental Hygienist she started practicing in private dental practice providing quality care and meet the needs of the changing health care,

Mary Jane is dedicated to update her professional knowledge, skills, values, and practice by continuing professional development (CPD). She is very interested to bring all the experiences and values and different approaches to the preventive and oral health care aspect from abroad while she attends many conferences all over Europe during the year. Mary Jane has also been appointed as a Clinical Demonstrator with the Dental Hygiene students within the University of Malta.

Catherine O’ Brien

BSc (Hons.) Dental Hygiene

Dental Hygienist

Catherine has been a member of Sammut Specialists since January 2023. She worked as a dental nurse in the UK for 14 years and then qualified as a Dental Hygienist from the University of Malta in 2022.  She currently works in private practice and at The University of Malta as a Clinical Demonstrator in Dental Hygiene. 
She is a member of the Malta Association of Dental Hygienists and is dedicated to Continuing Professional Development. Catherine is passionate about patient care and strives to assist all her patients in how to prevent dental disease.

Cristina Agius

BSc (Hons.) Dental Hygiene

Dental Hygienist

Cristina Agius is a dedicated dental hygienist, newly graduated from the University of Malta. She approaches her work with eagerness and a thirst for knowledge, always striving to enhance her skills and provide the best possible care to her patients. Cristina believes in the transformative power of a healthy smile, and her mission is to minimise gingival disease and help patients achieve radiant, confident smiles they can be happy with.

Robert Sammut

BChD, FDS RCSEng

Founder and Periodontist

Robert qualified from the University of Malta in 1972 and soon afterwards moved to London to further his training. He trained at the Royal Dental Hospital, St George’s Hospital, St Thomas’ hospital and the Eastman Dental Institute. Robert gained his FDS from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1976. He returned to Malta in 1979 to practice Periodontology and Dentistry in Valletta.
